Do I need a referral to see Dr. Christian?
Many insurance plans do not require a referral to see a general surgeon, but some do. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your visit. Our office staff can also help verify your specific plan's requirements.
Which hospital does Dr. Christian operate at?
Dr. Christian is affiliated with Freeman Health System, giving patients access to a full continuum of hospital-based surgical and emergency care when needed.
Do you have multiple office locations?
Yes. We see patients at our offices in Joplin, MO, Neosho, MO, and Pittsburg, KS, making it easier for patients throughout the region to access care close to home.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical records or imaging related to your surgical concern. If you have completed new patient forms in advance, please bring those as well.

About Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery
What is the difference between robotic surgery and traditional surgery?
Robotic and minimally invasive surgery use small incisions and specialized instruments — including, in robotic cases, a surgeon-controlled robotic system — to perform procedures with greater precision. Compared to traditional open surgery, these approaches often result in less pain, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to normal activities.
Is robotic surgery safe?
Yes. Robotic surgery is performed entirely by your surgeon, who controls every movement of the robotic instruments in real time. The technology allows for enhanced precision and visualization, but the surgical decisions and skill remain entirely those of your surgeon.
Will I be a candidate for minimally invasive or robotic surgery?
Candidacy depends on your specific diagnosis, medical history, and prior surgeries. During your consultation, Dr. Christian will evaluate your case and recommend the safest and most effective surgical approach for your individual needs.

Recovery & Preparation
How long is recovery after surgery?
Recovery time varies significantly depending on the procedure performed and your individual health. Minimally invasive and robotic procedures generally allow for faster recovery than traditional open surgery. Dr. Christian will provide a personalized recovery timeline during your consultation.
Will I need to stay in the hospital?
Many minimally invasive procedures, such as gallbladder removal, can be same-day or, for some complex cases, sometimes just overnight-stay surgeries. More complex procedures may require a longer hospital stay. This will be discussed in detail before your surgery.
How should I prepare for surgery?
Preparation instructions vary by procedure and will be provided directly by our office before your surgery date. In general, patients are asked to follow specific guidelines regarding eating, drinking, and medications in the days leading up to surgery.

Procedure-Specific Questions
Does gallbladder surgery require a large incision?
In most cases, no. Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) is typically performed using minimally invasive or robotic techniques through several small incisions, allowing most patients to go home the same day.
What is the treatment for hiatal hernia or chronic acid reflux?
For patients whose symptoms haven't improved with medication, surgical repair can, in many cases, provide long-term relief. Dr. Christian offers minimally invasive and robotic approaches to repair the hiatal hernia and restore normal anatomy at the junction of the esophagus and stomach.
What types of hernias do you treat?
We treat hernias throughout the abdominal wall, including inguinal, umbilical, and incisional hernias, using both minimally invasive and open techniques based on each patient's individual anatomy and risk factors.
Do you treat skin cancers and skin masses?
Yes. We provide surgical removal of skin masses and skin cancers, with careful attention to both thorough treatment and cosmetic outcome.
